I wasn’t involved in the negotiation with the farmer, so I don’t know the answer to your question. My guess is that was an economic decision, not a compassionate one, to let us take and re-home the hens (it’s very labour intensive just to get the birds of out the cages, and I’m not sure if there are additional costs associated with slaughter). With the free range thing, that could also just be an economic decision, who knows – the market share for free range is increasing all the time.

I’m confused about the farmer. Did he allow you to come in and take the chooks out of compassion or to cut costs (I’m assuming that having that many chooks slaughtered incurs a cost, even if it’s only the cost of his own time). And if he’s got the compassion to now move to free range, why didn’t he improve the conditions for his battery hens by at least keeping the place clean?
